Ø      Dolores on the album (taken from the CD booklet): “This, our fifth album, “Wake Up And Smell the Coffee” is an extremely up and grateful album. Life is never as “black and white” as one may assume it to be...guess the lows make the highs far superior. Since “Bury the Hatchet” was released we toured: fortunately I became pregnant again and gave birth to a beautiful little girl. I guess family and friends are the essential key to happiness. It is from such simplicities that we create love-“for me love is all”-I mean it! So, a far cry from “To The Faithful Departed”, but life is short and meant to be enjoyed.” The album becomes a Top-5 hit in Europe's album chart and sells more than 1 million copies in its first week of release. The album goes to the #1 spot in Taiwan and Hong Kong, #2 in Mexico, Spain and France, #5 in Singapore, #6 in Switzerland, Top-10 in Greece.

The auction will run for three weeks and the items are autographed.

Ø      December 14th-15th: Friday-Dolores participates in the ninth annual Vatican Christmas charity concert, to raise money for the creation of 50 churches and meets Pope John Paul II. Saturday- 67 piece Orchestra: Dolores performs live “Analyse”, and three traditional Christmas songs-Little Drummer Boy, “Panis Angelicus” and “Silent night”. Notice that Noel rejoins the band since December 2001. Fergal comments: All is well with Noel’s family now and will stay that way hopefully. It’s incredible how much we all missed him. This band has an incredible bond and if one person isn’t there, you kind of feel like a body-part is missing and there is a kind of vulnerability there which normally doesn’t exist. But we are back to normal now and preparing set lists for our upcoming world tour”. Dolores presents the award for International Single of the Year to Geri Halliwell and the band is also nominated for the Best International Group of the Year along with Destiny’s Child (who won the award), U2 and Depeche Mode.

Ø      “Time Is Ticking Out” is released as the second single off the album, from which the sales of the single will be donated to the Chernobyl charity project. Dolores created this song after speaking to Ali Hewson, Patron of the Chernobyl Children's Project: "I wrote 'Time Is Ticking Out' last year," said Dolores. "I had just given birth to my second child, a beautiful healthy little girl. It was at this time that I read an article in an paper which featured The Chernobyl Children's Project and showed pictures of these kids that are still being born with so many illnesses. I had spoken briefly with Ali on the subject before this, but I was so moved, almost to tears, that I wrote 'Time Is Ticking Out.' It was inspired by the children and I hope I can raise awareness on this issue. It shouldn't be like this - we must do something about it."

Ø      February 17th: “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee World Tour” begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, a sold-out concert in which the band performs:

Ø December: Dolores is preparing a solo album, according to an interview she'd given in Hot Press magazine:

"I'm not going to go back and do another Cranberries album. I need to do a different project completely, and the boys need some freedom for a while". If you wonder what this album is going to be like here comes the answer:

"I'd like to do a little bit more work in the studio, or a little bit more flying out to places like Turkey or Africa and recording some different ethnic things and bringing it back for inspiration."

Also, the band may open the concerts for the Rolling Stones next year!

Ø December 10th: The Stars-Best of Live Tour is completed with the sold-out show at London's Hammersmith Apollo Theatre! This concert was the 81th and the last of the band for 2002!

Ø Dolores has been invited to the Vatican City in order to perform for Pope John Paul II on 14th of December. This is going to be Dolores' second time since last year's concert! The concert's purpose is to raise money in order to build new churches all around the world! Dolores performed 3 songs: Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful) (solo), Linger (solo) and Merry Xmas (War is over) (with all the other artists)!

Ø On the international website of CNN's music program "The Music Room", the visitors had the chance of voting for the best album of 2002, and at #4 they chose Cranberries' "Stars: The Best of 1992-2002". At #1 is the album of Coldplay, #2 is Eminem's, and #3 is Avril Lavigne's!

Ø January 21th: According to a press release, the Cranberries terminate their contract with their record label MCA. Here is the full document, posted at the band’s official site:

January 21, 2003

The Cranberries, today announced that they have terminated the remainder of their recording contract with MCA Records, a division of Vivendi Universal, effective immediately.

The group signed in 1991 with Island Records America, and transferred to MCA in 2000 following a contract renegotiation. Under the terms of that agreement, the group had one studio album remaining under that contract, but terminated following advice from their legal advisors.

"Since we were signed in 1991 by Island Records, we have gradually seen our label dissolve from a pioneering independent spirited label into a corporate monolith that completely lost touch with the group's creative vision" stated singer Dolores O'Riordan. "All of the people we have worked with over the years (in America and England) have been fired or left the company, so the band felt it was time to move on to new opportunities."

The Cranberries have released two albums in the past 15 months selling in excess of 3.2 million albums worldwide. Despite the current downturn within the music industry and little support from MCA in North America, the band have also performed 82 concerts to 600,000 people during that time.

"We have had great fan support throughout the world for many years" added guitarist Noel Hogan. "With little effort from our label, we have been pleased to see top 10 sales in many countries. The band is excited about the prospect of a new beginning , starting fresh, and looking forward to another ten years in the music business. We expect to have a new album released by the end of 2003."

The Cranberries are in the midst of celebrating their 10th Anniversary as a professional group. Career sales now exceed 38 million albums. The band are planning a tour later in the year, which they hope to confirm in the coming weeks.”

In the past, the band made sure that they have problems with MCA, due to poor promotion, especially in the United States. Here are some quotes proving the fact:

Dolores during the “Bury the Hatchet” era:

"going pretty good, it's just that alot of fans are coming up, going, 'Oh, Dolores, have you guys got a new album coming out?' And I'm like, 'It came out six months ago!', so it's that kind of thing."

"It's doin' OK, like, but alot of people don't really know it's out and stuff, 'cause our record company [Island] got bought out, so at the moment it's a bit messy over here [in the US]."

Fergal during the release of “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” :

We weren't sure what to expect as some (not all), members of our record company informed us that in their eyes, 'Wake Up And Smell The Coffee' is 'over' in America, and they have moved on to other things. Not exactly the words of encouragement you would like to hear as you are about to embark on a U.S. tour!!! But thanks to you, our incredibly supportive fans we say F*** 'em!!! We are here to play music and enjoy every minute of it, and thankfully that's the way it's been working out!"

Dolores during the Mexican press conference in 2002:

Since we were signed in 1991 by Island Records, we have gradually seen our label dissolve from a pioneering independent spirited label into a corporate monolith that completely lost touch with the group's creative vision"

"All of the people we have worked with over the years (in America and England) have been fired or left the company, so the band felt it was time to move on to new opportunities."

End of January: The Cranberries, after ending their contract with MCA, are planning to start their own independent label: (quotes and news taken fom ZOMBIEGUIDE)

"What we'd like to do now really is to be independent and start start our own label, I mean, we'll go off and look for distribution deals," Dolores O'Riordan told Pat Kenny via telephone earlier this morning on the Today with Pat Kenny radio show on RTE's Radio One in Ireland.

"At the end of the day, we decided that we'd be better off just to walk away and do our own thing, and we were kind of advised to walk away"

"I know, I mean, when you think about it, in the long term, down the road, at the end of the day, it'll come out better yourself. You know, when you've made your record deal anyway, you only get a percentage as an artist. At the end of the day, we believe in ourselves and we have a very strong fanbase around the world that have been with us for years. And since the birth of Molly two years ago, we've sold over three million albums between 'Wake Up and Smell the Coffee' and the greatest hits. I mean, that's a lot of albums, so we believe in ourselves and our fanbase are very loyal. So we want to do it our way... And it means being the captain of your own ship and it means not having to put up with somebody who doesn't give a toss and being stuck in a situation where you feel like you're there for security."

"Our problem is that we were signed to Universal New York, so that was it, you know? We didn't have a record deal in Italy, we didn't have a record deal in France, we didn't have a record deal in Asia. You see, our deal was with America and that was that. So that was kind of a problem as well, 'cos most of our success three or four years has been, like, in Asia, the album went #1 in the Asian charts, and it went Top 10 in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, places like that, you know? But if you don't have a label there, working, representing you, you're kind of out there on your own doing it. You've got the big guys back in New York just sitting there, not doing anything, and we're out there working really hard and we just feel like they're not supporting us."

"So at this stage, it's not a situation of 'them' and 'us,' or 'they're all bad guys,' a lot of them are good guys, you know what I mean, but it's just such a mess on the inside that we decided that at this stage, that we decided we'd be better off just to walk away. I mean, we're not compatible anymore."

"We still sell out big audiences in America, we still sell ten, fifteen-thousand seaters, or maybe even twenty, but since the birth of the kids and stuff, I've been concentrating more back on Europe and stuff. And like I said, there's such a kind of a major weird thing happening over there with hip-hop and stuff that the rock-and-roll bands aren't really being pushed over there. I know we're not the only band that feel like this, there's a lot of other bands that feel kind of like, 'What's going on?'"

Ø GREAT NEWS: The Cranberries, as it was announced in their official site, are going to open Rolling Stones' European Tour

"It's an honor to be able to open up for such a legendary band!" says Dolores

Ø January 31th: The auction that the band had organised online, via their official site, for Dolores' shoes from "I can't be with you" video is over! The winning bid was for 2775 Euros and came from France! It was an auction in order to benefit Chernobyl Children and Amnesty International and the 4 runners up won 2 DVDs of the band ("Beneath the skin: Live in Paris" and "Stars: The best of videos 1992-2002"), 2 Cranberries signed CDs ("Wake up & smell the coffee" and "Stars: The best of 1992-2002"), 1 signed box-set of the "Treasure box" and 1 "Stars" limited edition of tour poster, signed by the band!

Ø March: The Cranberries won the award for "Best Selling International Group of 2002" with "Stars" album. The ceremony will take place on 4th of April but the band cannot make it, so they recorded a video message for the TV broadcast that day!
